Abstract

Modern shipbuilding employs a variety of welding processes, with a view to achieve higher productivity and improved weld quality. It is estimated that in advanced countries like Japan, at least 40% of the total welding work (as measured by the weight of weld metal) on the ships' hull structure is carried out by automatic and semi-automatic means. In manual welding too, significant developments are taking place. Shipyards in India, are presently making all endeavours to advance in this field. In this context, three different aspects of welding have been picked out for a brief study.
