Abstract

A cross sectional study on blood pressure, food habit and nutritional status was carried out on 1 1 2 fishermen (aged between 18 to 60 years) living at the coastal region of Puri (Orissa). Inspite of regular intake of excess of alcohol, table salt or heavy smoking, this community is found to possess normal blood pressure level, compared to the non-fishing community of the same socio economic background of the same locality, (control group). Considering all the studied parameters, it appears that absence of hypertension in this community might be due to their excessive, daily consumption of omega-3 fatty acid derived from plenty of marine fish.
